Leadership Scholar Program Assists Marine Corporal

The mission of the Leadership Scholar Program (LSP) is to provide academically and professionally qualified Marines with assistance in academic preparation and the application process for highly selective colleges and universities throughout the country to offer the most expeditious route for attainment of their respective educational goals.

Cpl. Tyler Rachael is an exceptionally astute and natural leader. He has demonstrated outstanding potential to acquire knowledge and to teach others with natural abilities. Tyler’s peers gravitate to his leadership. He serves as an excellent role model for junior Marines. He was among the first to volunteer for extra tasks leading by example. Tyler has always demonstrated an industrious work ethic and overall compulsion to never give up or admit failure.

In June 2022, Tyler contacted the Camp Pendleton Voluntary Education Center (VEC) staff and started working toward his goals and applied to San Diego State University (SDSU). He followed the advice of the staff and registered for classes at San Diego Community College to improve his grade point average and complete enough units to transfer to his dream university.

In December 2022, Tyler informed the VEC staff about his acceptance into SDSU for fall 2023 to pursue a degree in business / finance management.

Tyler expressed his gratitude toward the LSP. “The LSP was an absolute blessing for me, and I would’ve never known about it if I hadn’t scheduled an appointment at the education center. I got there and was helped by Mrs. Banderas and weighing my educational options for the future, she brought up the LSP, and I decided it sounded like a good opportunity. Mrs. Alicia and Mr. Crisp worked on my behalf along with the school of my choice, San Diego State, and got me enrolled for the spring. I was pessimistic with my chances of immediately going to a four-year university upon getting out, but with the help of those around me it became a possibility and later a reality. I’m extremely grateful for everything they’ve done for me and the program that has me where I am today.”
